EngageApp vs Customer.io

A side-by-side comparison for small e-commerce teams running abandoned-cart and win-back journeys. Customer.io sells SMS and WhatsApp — the difference is how you pay, and how fast you can stand up a first journey.

Per-profile vs pay-per-send pricing

Customer.io prices by the number of profiles in your workspace, so your bill grows with your list even for contacts you never message. EngageApp spends credits only when a message is successfully sent — Email 1, SMS 3, WhatsApp 5 credits — so you pay for activity, not storage. Failed sends are never charged. See published packs.

SMS, WhatsApp, and API

Customer.io sends SMS (Twilio) and WhatsApp (Twilio / Meta) and has a mature Track API, App API, and Pipelines. EngageApp also sends SMS (Twilio, Termii, BulkSMS, Vonage, 5LinkxSMS) and WhatsApp (Meta Cloud API or self-hosted GOWA). Server-side ingest is POST /api/v1/public/events with a secret API key — contacts, events, and enroll. Campaigns, templates, and channels are built in the dashboard, not via that public API.

AI campaign generation, built in

Describe a goal — win back lapsed buyers, onboard new signups — and EngageApp generates the full multi-step journey, including copy, timing, and channel selection.

Migrate: events → first journey

  1. Keep your existing event names. POST the same payloads to /api/v1/public/events with external_id (your user id) and an email so the contact can be mailed.
  2. In EngageApp, create an Email channel and a template, then a campaign whose trigger is that event (for example checkout.started).
  3. Activate the campaign and send one test event. That is the first journey — see the 10-minute first event → first email guide.
  4. Point your backend at EngageApp, run both in parallel, then retire the Customer.io workspace. We do not import Customer.io journeys automatically.

When to choose EngageApp

Choose EngageApp if you want to pay per send instead of a monthly profile floor, generate a journey from a goal with AI, or send WhatsApp from Meta Cloud or a self-hosted GOWA number — especially for abandoned-cart and win-back on a small list.

When to choose Customer.io

Customer.io excels for developer-heavy teams that need Liquid templating, Pipelines, and a long-lived Track/App API surface. If you have engineering resources to invest in setup and already live in their data model, that depth is hard to match.
